What Is Rhinoplasty? Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is one of the most frequently performed plastic surgery procedures. During rhinoplasty, the nose is reshaped, reduced or augmented to improve its appearance. Nose surgery may be performed to correct a birth defect or repair an injury such as a broken nose. It is also often performed strictly for cosmetic reasons. Serving patients from Toms River, Manasquan, Monmouth County, Ocean County, and surrounding areas, with ongoing sinusitis, rhinoplasty is sometimes performed in conjunction with endoscopic sinus surgery; for a patient with a deviated septum, it is often performed along with septoplasty, a procedure that corrects a deviated septum. In such cases, nose surgery effectively treats health and breathing problems, in addition to improving the patient’s appearance. Candidates For Rhinoplasty Candidates for rhinoplasty have finished their facial growth. Girls should typically be at least 15 or 16 years old; boys should be at least 17 or 18. Patients considering a nose job should be in overall good health and not smoke. It is important that candidates have realistic expectations about what rhinoplasty can do. Although undergoing nose surgery may boost self-confidence, it should not be viewed as a cure-all for personality or relationship issues, and should not be the result of social pressure. Benefits Of Nose Surgery There are several benefits of rhinoplasty; they include facilitating breathing as well as improving appearance. During nose surgery, the Monmouth County plastic surgeon may attempt to do one or more of the following: Remove a hump Modify the bridge Reshape the tip Reshape or resize the nostrils Repair an injury Open breathing passages Increase or decrease the size A nose job can involve modifying bone, skin or cartilage, or all three. The Rhinoplasty Procedure Rhinoplasty, which takes from 1 to 2 hours, is usually an outpatient procedure performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia. Two techniques are typically used. In closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made within the nostrils. In open rhinoplasty, an incision is made across the columella, the tissue between the nostrils. With both methods, the soft tissues covering the nose are gently lifted, and the bone and cartilage are sculpted to the desired shape. If additional cartilage is needed to augment the nose, it is frequently taken from the patient’s nasal septum. If larger sections of tissue are required, cartilage may be surgically removed from the ear or other parts of the body as well. If the patient has a deviated septum, the septum and inner structures of the nose are adjusted to improve breathing. The tissues are then redraped and stitched closed. If necessary, nostrils are reshaped in the final stage of rhinoplasty. Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty If you are interested in cosmetically enhancing the nose but are not ready for surgery, Dr. Foster also provides non-surgical rhinoplasty through the use of injectable fillers. This is a completely non-surgical procedure that can help to straighten the appearance of the nose or flatten out a visible bump. This treatment is not permanent and is not an option for everyone as it can only correct cosmetic concerns. If you are interested in finding out if you are a candidate, contact our office today to schedule your consultation. Recovery From Nose Surgery Immediately after surgery, the patient’s nose and eye area are usually bruised and swollen. Splints and nasal packing remain in the nose for a few days. During this period, the patient may experience some nasal pain or a dull headache, as well as some bleeding and drainage from the nose. Most patients feel like themselves within a few days and are able to return to regular activities in about a week. To increase comfort, and decrease bleeding and swelling, nose surgery patients are advised to follow these post-surgical directives: Avoid strenuous activities Take baths instead of showers Avoid blowing the nose Avoid becoming constipated Avoid exaggerated facial expressions Brush the teeth gently Avoid pulling clothing over the head Use a sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher Limit dietary sodium Do not use ice packs Although the patient usually looks “normal” a week or two after surgery, minimal swelling may be present for as much as a year. What Is FaceTite™? FaceTite™ is a body contouring procedure that also provides significant skin contraction. The FaceTite™ system uses a cannula with an internal electrode that is inserted through a tiny incision. Attached to the cannula, but resting atop the skin, is a metal wand that features an external electrode. This is the same patented radiofrequency-assisted liposuction technology that debuted with BodyTite™. The radiofrequency energy passes from the internal electrode to the external electrode, heating the fat and surrounding tissues without damaging those tissues. The liquefied fat is then suctioned away through the cannula. The RF energy that has heated the dermis layer of the skin causes the skin to contract and tighten, firming the area. What Is NeckTite™? Employing the same RF energy and liposuciton as FaceTite™, NeckTite™ uses a handpiece specifically for the looser skin and underlying fat that is common to the neck. By combining radiofrequency energy with liposuction, NeckTite™ gently removes excess fat and tightens the skin on the neck. This area of our body is one of the first to show sagging and neck banding with age. NeckTite™ is great for address sagging neck skin and jowls. It creates a tighter, slimmer profile and contour. What Areas Can Be Treated With FaceTite™ And NeckTite™? These procedures can be used all across the face, jawline, jowls, and the entire neck. It can be used under the eyes and even on the brows. What Are The Benefits Of Radiofrequency-Assisted Liposuction? The secret to FaceTite™ and NeckTite™ at FosterMD is the combination of liposuction and radiofrequency energy. There are numerous benefits to the combination of RF energy and liposuction used with these systems. Superior body contouring — Because the RF energy liquefies the fat that is then instantly suctioned away, contouring is smoother and avoids the lumpy, irregular appearance that can follow liposuction. Skin contraction — The heating that melts the fat also causes a “wound” response in the dermis layer of the skin. This causes the skin to contract down and the body produces new amounts of collagen (the skin’s structural support protein) to send to the perceived “wound.” Liposuction without RF energy doesn’t provide skin contraction. Controlled directional energy distribution — Because the RF energy transfers from the cannula through the tissue up to the external handpiece, the direction can be precisely controlled. This maximizes the RF energy utilization, while ensuring there is little risk of thermal damage to surrounding tissues. Decreased downtime — Traditional liposuction involves tissue trauma, as the cannula is moved back and forth under the skin to break up fat pockets. By using RF energy to break down and liquefy fat, the cannula gently extracts the fat. This creates far less bruising, swelling, and downtime. How Do FaceTite™/ NeckTite™ Treatments Work? Both of these procedures are minimally invasive body contouring procedures at FosterMD. The procedures are both performed with only local anesthesia to numb the areas where tiny incisions are created for the insertion of the cannula. The cannula itself is very thin, about the size of a knitting needle. The treatments areas are injected with a tumescent solution common to modern liposuction. The solution consists of saline, epinephrine, and Lidocaine. This numbs the area, makes the fat easier to remove, and constricts the blood vessels for less bleeding and subsequent bruising. Then the FaceTite™/NeckTite™ handpiece cannula is inserted. On the tip of the cannula is an internal electrode that delivers the radiofrequency energy below the skin to liquefy the fat. Above the skin on the surface rests the other portion of the handpiece, a metal wand that serves as the external electrode. This is important because it give the RF energy a pathway upward through the skin from the internal electrode to the external electrode. This provides the skin tightening typical to RF treatments. While the thin cannula is delivering the RF energy below the skin to liquefy and then suction out unwanted fat, the RF energy is also pulsing upward through the skin. This is the dual benefit of both FaceTite™ and NeckTite™, and our FosterMD patients love it

Youthful skin is maintained by specific building blocks. In order to postpone or correct the signs of aging, such as nasolabial folds and jowls, it is essential that we consider what those building blocks are. In our offices, we offer treatments that have been proven to reach deep beneath the epidermis where the skin’s foundation begins. Morpheus8 is one of the most advanced skin tightening and toning methods we have seen to date. We are proud to provide this technology for patients interested in meaningful facial rejuvenation without surgery. Morpheus8 is an advanced microneedling treatment developed to stimulate remodeling in the adipose tissue of the dermis. Designed by In Mode Aesthetics, a leading manufacturer in the radiofrequency technology arena, Morpheus8 is the only device that combines radiofrequency with the microneedling technique. On its own, microneedling provokes a healing response in which collagen proliferation increases. With Morpheus8, collagen increase is only the icing on the cake. By inserting radiofrequency energy to tissue approximately 4mm deep, this device prompts tissue remodeling that includes thickening and tightening. Can Morpheus8 Be Combined With Other Treatments? Morpheus8 is commonly combined with FaceTite and NeckTite. This combination procedure, known as EmbraceRF, is our current state of the art, minimally invasive facial rejuvenation for this who do not wish to undergo a surgical facelift. At FosterMD, Morpheus8 is an integral part of almost every FaceTite and NeckTite procedure and we are one of the few practices that can offer both technologies. Combining Morpheus8 with FaceTite or NeckTite enhances tissue tightening, adds improvement in skin color and texture and can actually sculpt adipose tissue. What Is EmbraceRF? We are pleased to offer EmbraceRF in our New Jersey offices. This combination treatment is often considered as a way to bridge the gap between more conservative nonsurgical treatments and facelift surgery. EmbraceRF begins with the FaceTite radiofrequency technique to stimulate the elimination of fatty deposits in the lower face and neck. This technique is followed by Morpheus8 microneedling radiofrequency to achieve substantial remodeling of the skin’s building blocks. How Many Morpheus8 Treatments Are Needed? Morpheus8 begins to stimulate change immediately after the first treatment. Depending on the extent of improvement a patient desires, a series of 2 to 4 treatments may be considered. It is our intent to recommend only what a patient needs to reach their desired outcome. We conduct a thorough consultation and skin assessment to fully understand each person’s needs. Morpheus8 Recovery Most patients can use makeup the day following treatment. Occasionally, Mild redness and swelling may occur or two. Can I Wear Makeup After My Morpheus8 Treatment? Microneedling with Morpheus8 goes above and beyond to affect deep adipose tissue. The skin may be slightly sensitive for a few days. Generally, patients are encouraged to refrain from wearing makeup for 1 to 2 days. Will My Face Be Red After Morpheus8 Microneedling? Patients can expect their skin to be red for a day or two following Morpheus8 treatment. Slight swelling may also occur. These side effects are typically mild and they diminish quickly. Is Morpheus8 Painful? We do our best to make every treatment comfortable. Microneedling with radiofrequency may feel slightly uncomfortable in certain areas. However, our use of topical numbing cream makes treatment much more pleasant than many patients expect. What Is Hair Transplantation? Many people experience great anxiety and loss of self-esteem when faced with natural, hereditary hair loss and baldness. Virtually all men, as they age, will experience some degree of hair loss. The extent and pattern of loss depends on the genetic predisposition. Many approaches to hair replenishment are available including hair weaves, wigs, hair pieces, surgery, Minoxidil, Propecia®, and others. Hair transplant surgery has gained wide popularity amongst the 60 to 70 percent of men and small percentage of women who experience alopecia, the medical term for baldness. Beginning hair transplantation before one is completely bald is an excellent idea, allowing some existing hair to be combed over the new grafts while the patient awaits growth of newly transplanted hair. Serving patients from Toms River, Manasquan, Monmouth County, Ocean County and surrounding areas, Dr. Foster can help restore your hair and help you feel like yourself again. Am I A Good Candidate For Hair Restoration? Patients with male pattern baldness, baldness from accidents, operations, burns, radiation treatment, infection, or even those who have lost their eyebrows are good candidates for this procedure. In some cases, insurance carriers may cover the cost. Patients must realize that the full head of thick hair present before the balding process will not reappear as a result of the procedure. They should also realize that transplanted hair frequently falls out initially, and grows back in two to four months. With proper hairstyle and grooming, a patient can achieve an appearance close to that of full hair growth. The best approach should be conservative, with the goal being a natural-appearing, adult hairline. Hair transplantation should be approached with the patient’s present and future hairline and overall appearance in mind. Schedule A Consultation Starting to notice significant hair loss and looking for a solution? What Is Laser Hair Removal? Laser technology has become one of the cornerstones of aesthetic medicine. The lasers that are available today gently and effectively remove unwanted hair to give people the smooth skin they desire. Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that works on the principle of selective thermolysis. Each time laser light penetrates hair follicles, the pigment in the hair is targeted for destruction. In addition to vaporizing hair that is growing in the follicle at the time of treatment, laser light also damages individual follicles, significantly inhibiting future hair growth. Laser hair removal is not considered a permanent form of hair removal. However, the results of this treatment are expected to last many years. Who Are The Candidates For Laser Hair Removal? Several factors affect the decision regarding who is and is not a good candidate for laser hair removal. Laser light is very intense. During treatments, light targets the pigment, or color, in hair. By targeting pigment (melanin), the laser breaks down hair follicles without damaging the skin. However, hair color and skin type do matter. Laser hair removal is ideal for people with darker, coarser hair and lighter skin. However, thanks to advances in laser technology, modern devices are capable of treating a wider range of complexions, including those that have little contrast between skin and hair. The exception is very blonde, thin, or grey hairs, which have little to no melanin to absorb laser energy. What Are The Benefits Of Laser Hair Removal? The primary advantage of laser hair removal is that this treatment achieves lasting results that begin after the very first session. Laser treatment can be conducted on virtually any part of the body where significant change is desired. Common treatment areas include: Upper lip Beard and throat Bikini area Underarms Arms Chest and abdomen Shoulders and back Legs Toes/feet What Are The Disadvantages Of Laser Hair Removal? Laser hair removal has very few disadvantages. People interested in long-term results are advised to obtain treatment from a trained professional. Care must be taken during the laser hair removal process to target all hair follicles without depositing too much heat into the upper layers of the skin. Overheating can result in burns and scarring. How Often Can I Get A Laser Hair Removal Treatment? Body hair grows in phases. Follicles are in an active growth phase only 20 to 30 percent of the time. Laser treatment targets follicles that are active at the time. It is necessary to repeat treatment every 6 to 8 weeks until the cycle of hair growth has been completed. Hair begins to shed 2 to 3 weeks after the first treatment. After that time, hair that grows in is usually thinner and lighter. With every treatment that is performed, usually between 5 and 8, hair growth decreases exponentially. Touch-ups can be sought as needed if hair growth resumes. This may not occur for years after a series of treatments is completed. How Should I Prepare For My Laser Hair Removal Treatment? There is very little to do to maximize the comfort and efficacy of laser hair removal treatments. Patients are advised by Dr. Foster to: Avoid tanning and the use of self-tanners several weeks before treatment. Avoid products that increase skin sensitivity, including exfoliating chemicals and certain essential oils. Stop plucking and waxing at least two weeks before treatment. Shave the day before each session. Is Laser Hair Removal Painful? Laser hair removal is generally comfortable for most people. Patients report feeling a slight stinging or snapping sensation as pulses of laser light are absorbed. These effects last only momentarily, easing into diffuse warming as treatment progresses.

How Common Is Skin Cancer? Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States.Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. It is estimated that nearly 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every day. Researchers estimate that 5.4 million cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, were diagnosed in 3.3 million people in the United States in 2012. It is estimated that 161,790 new cases of melanoma, 74,680 noninvasive (in situ) and 87,110 invasive, will be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2017. Invasive melanoma is projected to be the fifth most common cancer for men (52,170 cases) and the sixth most common cancer for women (34,940 cases) in 2017. Melanoma rates in the United States doubled from 1982 to 2011. Who Is Most At Risk For Developing Skin Cancer? Caucasians and men older than 50 have a higher risk of developing melanoma than the general population. The incidence in men ages 80 and older is three times higher than women of the same age. The annual incidence rate of melanoma in non-Hispanic Caucasians is 26 per 100,000, compared to 5 per 100,000 in Hispanics and 1 per 100,000 in African-Americans. In people of color, melanoma is often diagnosed at later stages, when the disease is more advanced. Before age 50, melanoma incidence rates are higher in women than in men, but by age 65, rates are twice as high in men. Melanoma in Caucasian women younger than 44 has increased 6.1 percent annually, which may reflect recent trends in indoor tanning. Melanoma is the second most common form of cancer in females age 15-29. Melanoma is increasing faster in females age 15-29 than in males of the same age group. Skin Cancer Survival Rates Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, the two most common forms of skin cancer, are highly curable if detected early and treated properly. The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent. Five-year survival rates for regional and distant stage melanomas are 62 percent and 18 percent, respectively. Death Rates From Skin Cancer The vast majority of skin cancer deaths are from melanoma. On average, one American dies from melanoma every hour. In 2017, it is estimated that 9,730 deaths will be attributed to melanoma — 6,380 men and 3,350 women. According to a recent study, men diagnosed with melanoma between the ages of 15 and 39 were 55 percent more likely to die from melanoma than females diagnosed with melanoma in the same age group. An estimated 3,860 deaths from skin cancers other than melanoma and NMSC will occur in the United States in 2017. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 65,000 people a year worldwide die from melanoma. What Is A Facelift? The technical term for a facelift is rhytidectomy, derived from rhytid, the Greek word for wrinkle, and the suffix-ectomy, which means “the removal of”. This procedure has evolved to minimize downtime and discomfort, frequently having the patient back to their lifestyle in 10-14 days. People often incorrectly use the term facelift to describe total facial rejuvenation which is achieved by eyelid surgery, brow lift, facelift and often, laser or chemical peel. We divide the facelift into three parts: cheek, temporal and forehead components. Some patients require a full forehead lift during a facelift while others do not. We decide the extent of the procedure at the time of the consultation. Serving patients from Monmouth County, Ocean County, and surrounding areas, Dr. Foster welcomes patients to schedule a consultation at our Toms River or Manasquan locations. What Is A Secondary Facelift? Facelift | Foster Although the plastic surgeon attempts to “turn back the clock” with a facelift, the aging process relentlessly persists. Patients with excessive skin laxity (sagging and “looseness) should expect a moderate degree of skin rebound. When aging or skin rebound causes some of the sagging to reappear, we may perform a secondary facelift or tuck-up. In some patients, we can perform this as soon as six to twelve months after the initial facelift. Often, the secondary facelift best achieves the desired lasting effect. Because of these limitations, we may recommend a highly effective second mini-lift when the signs of aging begin to reappear. This secondary tuck-up produces exceptional results and is longer lasting. In addition, this secondary surgical procedure is significantly “less extensive and less expensive”. The old incisions and scars are reused and generally heal quite well. Patients who undergo a facelift at a young age may choose to continue on a maintenance program of tuck-up procedures. This allows him or her to remain as young-looking as possible for the remainder of their life. You should understand that undergoing a facelift does not necessitate undergoing subsequent surgery-the effects of just one procedure are everlasting, with subsequent surgery being optional in most cases. Preparing For Your Rhytidectomy Prior to arriving at the surgical location, we prescribe patients special medications and instructions to follow. Twilight anesthesia is most commonly used during the procedure. We do not shave any hair in preparation for the facelift surgery. We make incisions in front of and behind the ear. The tiny resulting scars blend into the natural creases and are camouflaged in the scalp. Occasionally, there may be temporary hair thinning along the incision lines. This usually resolves itself within six months. The hairline is be pulled slightly upward if a brow or forehead lift is necessary. We can make the incision along the frontal hairline for patients with high foreheads. It can also actually lower the existing hairline. Facelift Recovery A facelift is not painful. After the operation, we apply a facial wrap is to help prevent swelling and bruising. We remove the wrap the morning following the procedure. Minimal swelling and bruising may appear around the ears and sometimes in the neck. Swelling and bruising may appear around the ears and sometimes in the neck. Swelling and bruising peaks two to three days following the surgery and typically subsides in one to two weeks. We recommend that patients be out of bed after four hours and keep the head of the bed elevated for the first week or two. We remove clips in the hairline or sutures around the ear one week after surgery. When Can I Return To My Normal Activities After Facelift Surgery? Most patients are able to shower the day after surgery and resume other activities the following day. Makeup usually may then be applied after the hairline clips and sutures are removed. At this point, driving may safely be resumed and the patient may return to work. Schedule A Consultation Are you starting to notice facial sagging? Eyelid Surgery With Dr. Wayne Foster The main focal point of visual contact is the eyes. When excess skin lays on the eyelashes or over the corners of the eye, they look tired and shady. Puffiness of the upper eyelid or bags and puffiness of the lower eyelids are often caused by hereditary fatty protrusions that can easily be removed to provide a more youthful and pleasing appearance. Dr. Wayne Foster performs eyelid surgery in Toms River and Manasquan serving Monmouth County, Ocean County and surrounding areas in NJ, as a solution to pesky undereye problems. What Is Blepharoplasty? Blepharoplasty, also know as eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure that rejuvenates saggy, puffy eyes. This is done by removing excess fat and skin from the area of treatment, the upper or lower eyelids. This procedure is done to improve the patient’s appearance, as well as improving their vision. Blepharoplasty can also tighten the tissue and muscles surrounding the eyes. This procedure is often combined with facelift and brow lift surgery, as well as injectable fillers. Upper Blepharoplasty An upper blepharoplasty can rejuvenate puffy or tired-looking eyes with the removal of excess skin. The procedure treats loose and sagging skin on the upper eyelids that could cause problems with vision. A different concern in comparison to the lower eyelid surgery. The best candidates for this surgery have puffy eyelids that need to be removed for cosmetic or vision related reasons. Lower Blepharoplasty A lower blepharoplasty corrects sagging or drooping eyelids. The procedure treats fine wrinkles, under-eye bags, drooping lower eyelids, excess skin and circles under the eye. The best candidates for this surgery do not have any serious eye conditions, do not smoke, and have healthy facial tissue and muscle. In about 45 minutes to an hour, you can lose those puffy bags and sagging skin. If your eyelids are extremely puffy, surgery may be justified for functional, as well as cosmetic reasons. It may be recommended that you see an optometrist or ophthalmologist who can document the presence or absence of visual field loss from overhanging eyelids. If this is the case, insurance may cover a portion of your surgery. Be sure to advise your plastic surgeon of any eye diseases or difficulties. It is important that patients have undergone a complete eye examination within the previous twelve months. Please request your eye doctor to forward the report to your plastic surgeon’s office. The upper and lower eyelids are frequently done together. The upper or lower eyelid may be done alone or in conjunction with other procedures such as a facelift. Often, the lower eyelid fat can be removed without a visible incision. A basic technique, transconjunctival blepharoplasty, provides the approach from inside the eyelid to remove the fat. Any residual wrinkles are then removed with the laser or chemical peel or by excision of excessive skin. Using the laser to perform the surgery decreases the amount of swelling and bruising. The procedure can be performed under General Anesthesia and it can also be done in the office with Local Anesthesia. Blepharoplasty Recovery Typically, patients are able to return to their normal daily living with the aid of makeup and sunglasses. Minor swelling, bruising and blurred vision are temporary and minimized by the use of the laser. Any external scars go through a period of swelling, becoming red or pink before becoming virtually imperceptible. This occurs as the scar matures, which takes longer with thicker skin. Schedule A Consultation Do you feel like excess eyelid skin is making you look tired? Concerned over decreased field of vision due to overhanging lids? Schedule your eyelid surgery consultation by calling (732) 914-2233 for our Toms River office or (732) 449-2099 for our Manasquan office. Eyebrow Lift As we age our skin, muscles, and support tissues slacken across our bodies, and our forehead and the area around the eyebrows is certainly not immune. Unfortunately, sagging and drooping on the forehead really ages the face. Plus, it can give the impression to others that you are either perpetually tired, sad, or even angry. In extreme cases, sagging brows can begin to impact the patient’s vision. A brow lift with Dr. Foster can bring your sagging brows back up and eliminate that perpetual drooping, sad look. What Is A Brow Lift? A brow lift targets the brows and the forehead. The goal is to smooth forehead lines and to raise the brows, giving the person a younger, more alert appearance. To do this, Dr. Foster repositions or adjusts the muscles above the eyes and across the forehead. He also relieves the muscles that create the vertical lines between the eyebrows, commonly known as the 11s. What’s The Difference Between A Brow Lift And A Forehead Lift? Technically, these two procedures can be separate if the patient only wants to remove forehead lines, for instance, and not address the brows. Or vice versa. In most cases, Dr. Foster improves the entire forehead down through the brows all in one procedure. Would I Benefit From A Brow Lift? Some people have a genetic predisposition toward sagging brows. For others, it’s just a part of aging. If you have lines on your forehead and sagging brows, you’re fully aware. You may even have people ask if you’re tired or mad about something because of your sagging brows. If you’d like a simple test to see if a brow lift/forehead lift would help your situation, try this. Stand in front of the mirror and place the lower palms of each hand just above your eyebrows on each side of your head. Slightly pull those palms outward and upward and you’ll see how a brow lift will reposition your sagging skin and tissues. People who have this surgery with Dr. Foster are usually between 45 and 60 years old. How Are Brow Lifts Done? Whenever possible, Dr. Foster uses the endoscopic method for these procedures. This creates minimal incisions and makes for a far easier recovery. But for some patients this method doesn’t allow enough adjustment and removal of excess skin. Here is how the two methods are done. Dr. Foster will discuss your options during your consultation. Endoscopic Brow Lift Thanks to continuing improvements in technology, the endoscopic brow lift is becoming the standard for brow lifts. In this method, three to five short incisions are made within the hairline. An endoscope, a tiny instrument with a camera on the end, is inserted into one of the incisions. This provides Dr. Foster with excellent visuals of the area to be addressed without the need for the longer coronal incision. He inserts tools into the other small incisions to manipulate the skin and muscles. As you would expect, there is very little scarring with this method. Coronal Brow Lift Before the development of tiny endoscopes, this was the only option for performing a brow lift. Also known as the “traditional” brow lift, this method involves a single coronal (think of it as the shape of a pair of headphones) incision that runs from one ear, wraps up around the forehead, and terminates at the other ear. This incision is hidden within the hairline. The forehead skin is lifted away and underlying muscles are trimmed and repositioned as appropriate. If necessary, the eyebrows may be lifted. The final step is to trim excess skin. Then the skin in re-draped and the incision is closed. Can I Combine A Brow Lift With Other Procedures? Because brow/forehead lifts only target the area above the eyes through the forehead, many people combine them with eyelid surgery. This removes sagging from the eyelids and addresses puffiness under the eyes. Other patients combine a brow lift with a facelift to rejuvenate the entire face. Dr. Foster can discuss these possibilities with you during your consultation. One advantage of combining two procedures is that you only have a single recovery period. What Are The Risks With A Brow Lift? Brow lifts are a common procedure; they’ve been performed for decades and have been proven to be very safe and effective. This is surgery, so the usual possible complications exist: excessive bleeding, reaction to anesthesia, infection, and the like. Otoplasty, commonly referred to as ear pinning, corrects the size or placement of an individual’s ears. Otoplasty is generally performed on children ages of 4-14, as the ears finish growing by 4, and otoplasty can prevent adolescent ridicule, but the procedure is also performed on adults upon occasion. Good otoplasty makes the ears more proportional to the size and shape of the head and face. Schedule A Consultation Do you feel like you or your child would benefit from ear pinning or otoplasty? Overview The “pouty” full lip has never been more popular and attractive than today. Thinning and retraction of the lips are an integral part of the aging process, while others are just born with thinner lips. The upper and lower lip gradually rolls inward lengthening the distance from the nose to the pink lip. Because people have realized the importance of lips in the aged appearance, lip enhancement and rejuvenation procedures have become important in overall facial rejuvenation and beauty restoration. Many women are also enhancing their lips at a more youthful age to enhance overall beauty. What Is Lip Augmentation? Lip augmentation is a cosmetic treatment done in our office to increase the size of the lips. At Foster Facial Plastic Surgery, we use injectable fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane to augment the lips. During lip augmentation, either just the upper or lower lip can be augmented, or patients may choose to have both done at once. Are Lip Injections Painful? Prior to treatment, a numbing cream will be applied to the lips for about 15 minutes. Once the area is numb, we will begin injecting the filler of choice. There may still be a slight pinch felt at the time of injection, however, most patients report they did not feel anything uncomfortable during the procedure. How Soon After Lip Enhancement Will I See Results? Immediately after treatment, the lips will be swollen. Cold compresses are critical to minimize swelling and should be applied immediately following treatment. This swelling will subside within 24 to 48 hours. At this time, your results of treatment will be visible. A follow-up appointment should be scheduled within 2 weeks of your first treatment for additional filler injections as needed. Recovery After Lip Augmentation For the first 24 hours, it is recommended to avoid excessive smiling and manipulation of the area. You may eat after treatment, however, it is recommended that you choose foods that do not require you to open your mouth too wide. We also recommend that you do not use a straw for the first day or two after injection as this sucking motion could affect your results. Patients may experience bruising at the injection site for up to one week following treatment. It is important to keep your lips hydrated to avoid scabbing. Neck & Chin Liposuction Some people develop a fatty, double chin early in life, destroying the natural curvature of the chin and neck. Others develop a floppy-skinned, “turkey gobbler” deformity. This is caused by weakening of the muscles forming a band from the chin to the base of the neck. To address these problems, a small incision is made in the crease below the chin, excess skin is removed, and the underlying muscles tightened or excised. Liposuction is then used to remove the excess fat in this area. A tiny incision may be added behind the ear to remove excess fat in the neck. When healed, these incisions are tiny and extremely well hidden becoming virtually invisible. A supportive bandage is removed the morning after the surgery and replaced with a light dressing. The final result depends upon the slow progression of the healing process. Improvement continues for months after the surgery. It is not unusual that during a consultation for a rhinoplasty, the surgeon may recommend the improvement of a receding chin. This occurs because the facial surgeon does not think of the nose as an isolated feature, but rather as an integral component of the entire face. In evaluating the aesthetic proportions of the face, plastic surgeons think in terms of the best possible profile obtainable for the individual. What Is Chin Augmentation? Chin augmentation or chin enhancement is a procedure that can alter the underlying structure of the face. This can provide a better balance to the facial features. The medical terms genioplasty and mentoplasty are used to refer to the addition and reduction of the patient’s chin. Candidates For Chin Enhancement Surgery Chin augmentation is for patients of good health and could benefit from the procedure. Usually, the patient will have a receding chin. What Are Chin Implants? Chin implants are used to build a better facial profile. Implants can be made from the patients own bone or made from synthetic materials like silicone. Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation Surgery is no longer indicated for chin augmentation. Injectable fillers can be used to provide volume to the face. The desired results are achieved in minutes, with no downtime. Benefits Of Chin Augmentation Chin augmentation can help produce noticeable changes in the face by building up the profile of the face. Chin augmentation can also help align the entire jaw and teeth. Why Is Rhinoplasty Usually Preformed With Chin Augmentation? Generally speaking, when seen in profile, the chin should nearly touch a vertical line drawn from the lower lip. If only a rhinoplasty is completed, while the chin is too weak and the forehead slanted, the facial profile will come to a “point” at the nose. In this case, you may be advised against rhinoplasty unless chin projection is increased at the same time. Side Effects Of Chin Enhancement As with any surgery, there can be complications, although rare, some include: swelling hematoma weakness or numbness of the lower lip (which usually does not last long) Infection Implant displacement Schedule A Consultation If you are considering a rhinoplasty, you may also want to consider a chin augmentation as well. Making sure your facial features are compatible is very important when considering plastic surgery.
